Trip To The ER

Olivia Cuts Lip
Olivia was in bad shape after cutting her lip.

Olivia and pebble-filled pavement do not get along.

She's found that out the hard way twice in three days this week. The first incident happened Monday on the way to school. Dad was dropping the girls off an hour late (remember that super long UNO hockey game Sunday night?) and Olivia fell in the parking lot. That time, she badly cut the palm of her hand.

Wednesday's incident was even more serious. While playing at the park, she fell on the sidewalk (apparently face-first) and cut her bottom lip. She came running and screaming to Dad, who couldn't miss the sight of bright red blood pouring out of her mouth.

Dad grabbed Julia's red UNO hockey sweatshirt (much to her dismay) and shoved it into Olivia's mouth. Then he made her rinse her mouth out with water from Lauren's new Tour of California water bottle (she didn't complain) and hustled the other girls to pick up their bikes and balls and hustle to the Suburban.

When we got home, Mom did a quick assessment and decided the folks at the ER had better take a second look. Aunt Dee-Dee sped over to the house to whisk Mom and Olivia away while Julia continued to complain about the blood on her sweatshirt.

At Children's Hospital, the doctor told us that they really don't stitch up cut lips anymore because children tend to break the stitches open. So with a popsicle in hand, Olivia returned home with instructions not to eat anything sweet or spicy (or hard) for the next 24-48 hours.

As of this writing, she is doing quite well - with not a single complaint that her lip is bothering her. And Julia seems to have forgotten about the blood on her sweatshirt. (Thanks, Mom, for washing it.)

Good job keeping your composure, administering first aid, and getting all the kids together and back home, Sean! I know what a handful that can be, especially when emergencies arise. Kudos!

Hey Olivia - Make sure you show your cut lip to Uncle Neil. He can tell you HIS cut lip story and with what Uncle Paul gave him to staunch the blood flow.

I hope you feel better Olivia! I am surprised they didn't try to "glue" it. That is what they did with one of my daycare kids when he cut his lip but he was only 1.
