Visitation, Funeral And Burial
The weekend was a whirlwind for us, with so many things going on - in addition to the usual family commitments (basketball games, etc.).
Lauren was the only YD girl who attended Fr. Paul's visitation Friday night at St. Bridget's church. She has a new rosary and told us she wanted to "try it out." The rosary was well attended and, while Lauren shied away from getting too close to the casket, some of her cousins did pay their final respects to Fr. Paul from close up.
Afterwards, we enjoyed a nice dinner at Johnny Sortino's pizza in the company of Aunt Annabelle and Uncle Randy's family, along with Aunt Dee-Dee and Uncle Jon. Only Lauren got to come along, though, while the other girls were watched by "Mrs. Schrutte."
Saturday, we caught a break with the weather. The forecast initially had called for up to two inches of snow. Instead, the skies were bright and sunny, with mild temperatures (low 40s). The weather probably contributed to a good turnout for the funeral. Some of the girls noticed Fr. Paul's open casket in the back when they came into the church (Mom did not) while Uncle Neil and Dad waited outside for their pallbearer cues. About 35 priests were in attendance and the homily was very well done.
The burial was particularly emotional, as a 21-gun salute and flag presentation were particular tear-jerkers. Fr. Paul's final resting place puts him among other priests who have served as pastors of Polish parishes in Omaha.
