No More Thumb Sucking For Lauren

Here's a close up of Lauren's new herbst device.

It did the trick for Emily - now it's keeping Lauren from sucking her thumb.

We're talking about the herbst Dr. Clark Stevens put in Lauren's mouth Tuesday. If you are not familiar with it (and we looked for on-line evidence of Emily's on this blog to no avail), a herbst device presents your lower jaw from moving backward.

The appliance typically corrects a condition where someone has a small lower jaw that is further back than it should be. The herbst will help Lauren's lower jaw catch up in growth.

So now she has to be careful about what she eats. Cold foods such as ice slushes, popsicles and ice will freeze the cement and make the brace loosen. Sticky foods (caramels, gum and candy suckers) can pull the brace away from teeth. Hard candies can bend and loosen it, so all of the food above is off limits.

Lauren said her mouth is a little sore and she's pretty tolerant of pain, so it must be bad. But she's also proud that she isn't sucking her thumb.

Here's the "before" picture showing how much her upper jaw protrudes over her lower one:

I hope you feel better soon!
It sounds like you can't eat any of the good stuff.

Wow no ice cream!!!! Ryan and Jackie had something like that but I used it to widen the upper jaw. I had to move it with a piece of wire every night. Poor Jackie still has hers until one tooth comes down.

It is a Palatal Expander and does just that... expands her palate. Yes, Karen, I too have a tool to turn the device a millimeter or so each morning and night. At the end of 14 days, the device will be "spread" as far as possible (or at least as much as Dr. Stevens wants it to be,) and then Lauren has to wear it for about six months to allow her palate to widen and grow back together. She has been quite a trooper so far!
Side note: Although she is not complaining very much; I do not remember Emily complaining at ALL! I think Em enjoyed the attention that she got from having all of that metal in her mouth.

Poor Jackie's is still in because they are waiting for a tooth to come down so they are using it as a spacer. She has had it since
3rd grade!!! She will be in 8th grade. Stupid tooth. She does get to chew sugarless gum now. I figure if it falls out now so be it.
